Last Saturday was another great day for CHH! With 7 new sign ups, our group tops out at at 81 members. And this was only our fourth exchange! An idea whose time has definitely come for Coronado.

Even though the summer warmth still escapes us, the harvest was plentiful. Members brought a bounty to share including beets, cherry tomatoes, green peppers, lemons, figs, natal plums (yes, they are edible!) kale, chard, avocados, strawberries, celery and loads of every kind of herb imaginable, including organic nutmeg direct from India. And, on the “home made” table” were sage bundles, Algerian Ivy, quiche, spiced pecans, almond butter rice krispy treats, pumpkin spice chocolate chip muffins, gluten free chocolate chip banana coconut muffins, nan and hummus dip. Yummo as Rachel Ray would say…:-)

Thanks to Meghan McGuire who helped at the sign in table, and Chris Jeter who volunteered to come at 10:00 to help out with the bagging. We so appreciate the help of our members as volunteers. A call will go out for help with the next exchange as well.

Our program was once again fabulous, with a presentation by Elizabeth Hirsh of Whole Food, Whole Health. Elizabeth has experienced a debilitating illness herself, has walked the walk, and has come through those difficult and challenging times with a passion for helping others improve their overall health through diet. Elizabeth presented a fascinating, interactive, program on “Beating the Sugar Blues.” She led us to recognize sources of added sugar in our everyday foods (for instance, it is added to many brands of orange juice…who knew?), and suggested effective ways of dealing with those sugar cravings which we all have from time to time. She also shared with us twenty (count ‘em – 20) reasons why sugar ruins our health, from the well known obesity problems to the lesser known, but just as devastating, suppression of our immune systems and weakening of our eyesight. All of us walked out of the presentation with a vastly increased awareness of the negative role sugar plays in our diet and health. Those interested in continuing to learn how nutrition plays a vital role in their life can contact Elizabeth at 619-537-0053 to learn more about her 3 month and 6 month intensive programs. Thank you, Elizabeth, for your time and enthusiasm, as well as the invaluable information you shared.

Elizabeth Hirsh of Whole Food, Whole Health

Donated this week by two of our members were two self contained raised bed planters, complete with tomato cages. One was given in thanks to Elizabeth for her fine presentation and the other went home with a very a lucky member of CHH. After several persons looked over and talked about the containers, the idea arose for a future program on interesting ways to enlarge our gardens when actual land is at a premium. So put on your thinking caps about non-traditional, creative, ways of growing fruits and veggies in the limited space an urban setting presents. We will let you know the date for the program so you can share ideas you have tried, and discuss ideas which are still in the formative stages.

Next Coronado Home Harvest will be on October 16. The guest speaker will be Dan Kuhn, home-grown Coronadoan who will speak on Natural Ways to Control Garden Pests. Dan is a the owner of VermiPro, the county’s largest vermi-composting facility (worm farm). A certified Master Composter, Dan also has extensive knowledge in organic farming and gardening, natural/organic pesticides, soils and soil blends, home garden construction and consultation, hydroponics, and sustainable living methods. His phone number is 706-505-9261.

Special Talk!!! 10am-11am:

Bring your garden’s bounty, take home a wonderful assortment from Coronado’s finest gardens. No garden? Team up with a friend or neighbor. See a fruit tree in town that no one is eating, ask if you can harvest the crop and bring the owner a bag of fresh vegetables in return. Sorting volunteers welcome. Open to all. Free membership.

What to do if you would like to participate: (see also participation guidelines)

Get on the email list: info@coronadohomeharvest.org

If you’d like to participate, email us at info@coronadohomeharvest.org by the Thursday before the exchange, letting us know what FRUITS, VEGETABLES, HERBS, and FLOWERS you’ll have to contribute. You can also bring a home-made item as long as you include a list of the ingredients. Even if you don’t have anything in season, you can still participate by volunteering the day of the event.

Participants arrive between 8-10am with your harvest to share and a bag with your name on it. (Volunteers, please arrive at 8am)

Return between 12-1pm to pick up your farmer’s market-style bags of produce- all for FREE! (Unclaimed bags will be donated)

Question – How much produce should I contribute?
Answer – Whatever you have “extra.” we are happy to spread around anything you have that you won’t be able to use yourself, whether that’s 60 pounds of grapefruit, a shopping bag full of rosemary, or a handful of grapes!

Question – Do all members get a bag each month?
Answer – No. All participants get a bag. That means everyone who contributes something that month will get a free big bag of food.

Question – Can I donate my extra produce and not take a bag?
Answer – Absolutely. Thank you for your generosity!

Question - Can I drop off my produce on Thursday or Friday?
Answer – Nope. We don’t have any place to store it. But participants are welcome to drop off between 8am and 10am on the appointed Saturday.

Question - I forgot to email by Thursday with what I will bring, can I still participate?
Answer – Yes. However, it very helpful if you can remember to let us know ahead of time. It takes a lot of planning to figure out how many participants and how much produce we will have vs. how many bagging volunteers we will need each month.

Question – Are all volunteers guaranteed to work?
Answer – Well, it all depends. Some months there are only a handful of members contributing food and several dozen members who’d like to volunteer to bag. But I’ll let volunteers know for sure whether or not they’ll be needed by Friday morning before the Saturday exchange.

Question – I don’t live in Coronado, can I still participate?
Answer – YES! you can still exchange with us. The exchange is a Coronado community event, but we are a welcoming community and invite you to join in the spirit of sharing what we have.
